I've noticed a pattern with Japanese indie games, trite and cutesy art style, and completely hardcore gameplay. I still haven't finished Recettear and just thinking about Touhou makes me noivous.
It's just really satisfying to play, I'd be happy to spend a lot of time grinding in it just because it feels so nice to hit a whole bunch of enemies at once. The mechanics are simple enough to not get buried in, but complex enough for the game to have variance in play styles. It's just really impressive, kind of sad so many games like this get buried.

Looks like a lot of fun! Thanks for the video. It really gave good insight into the mechanics and feel. 😀 The art-style obviously reminds me of something like Xenogears. Really interested to check it out.
I hope to see a platformer on this series. I just played through Super Meat Boy and Shovel Knight, so I have a jumpin' on platforms itch, and it'd be sweet to see a good platformer staring a female character who doesn't use mood swings as their primary weapon like Princess Peach.
Alternatively, can anyone name one for me now?
EDIT: Besides Metroid. I was just reminded of that one.
Did swapping out items to suit a specific situation ever impede the overall game flow?
Did the mechanics of the combat and the narrative ever intertwine whatsoever?
What did you think about the UI? How much time did you spend in-game navigating menus?
How did you feel about the "silhouette" of each character's personality? How many dimensions did they have? Were they simply one-note and archetypal, or did they reasonably respond to the events of the world and game state? Do you think they will be memorable to you?
How do you presume the game would be experienced from different gamer-perspectives that vary wildly from your own?
One of my only critiques: Aside from general layout (e.g "this level is tall, this level is wide, this level has platforming") I would have liked to see you go much more in-depth about the level design. Generally when elements in games are naturally incongruous like 2d sprites + a 3d world, the level design is a key factor in smoothing the gap between these things. In addition to that, usually when combat systems are very simple, it is the level and enemy design that demands varied challenges out of the small subset of options that the player has access to. Many ARPGs are good examples of this (Bastion being the one I would cite that you may be familiar with).
I don't mean to barrage you with discussion points; feel free to address or not address whatever strikes your fancy. I hope this comment doesn't come across as overly critical, either. I really like that you've decided to talk about games more at length. I certainly don't consider myself an expert on the topic or anything of the sort, but I do really like talking about games.
The control scheme sounds like the standard control setup for every FPS on the market. Left stick moves back and forward, and side to side. Right stick moves the camera. Doesn't Tera also control like that?
If I may, I would suggest looking into Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure for a future episode. I played it a lot when I was a little girl and as long as you can withstand a few cheesy musical numbers, I think it will be worth your time to play. =)
Are you familiar with Hyperdimension Neptunia? If so do you think you can do an analysis on the remake of the first game: Hyperdimension Neptunia re birth1? It's available on steam.
Ahh I love this! It's such a breath of fresh air from all the negativity on the internet which chooses to focus on criticising games which misrepresent women. I love this idea of yours, and I'll definitely follow this great series idea you've got! People honestly need to stop focusing on the negative of things and take a look at the positive, celebrating games with beautifully three dimensional female characters, and that appreciation could help make brilliant female-led games less of a rarity and more common in the gaming industry.
Are you sure we should praise "literalization" over "translation"? I mean, lots of times, at least in the only 2 languages I'm fluent of (english/portuguese) I find myself pulling my hair about some translations that indeed translated what was said, but not what it was meant to convey. Although the former is more difficult because it requires a more in depth knowledge about the thing being translated, I myself think the end result sounds, if not "perfect", with far less "bumps" along the way.
greeting,i have chantelise too, arrow (key on keyboard) to scroll selection, but to select the selection(as i press enter nor space would select the selection ,i cant even start the game)?
Immediately reminds me or Recettear. I recognise the currency, item icons, some enemies and the elemental stones (which are experience points in Recettear). Ahh, It's a prequel, that's why
Digi, I don't know you're opinion of WatchMojo, but like them or hate them they have a lot of subscribers and now they're doing a Fan-voted Top 10 Youtube Anime Reviewers. This could get you A LOT of new subscribers even if you don't make it to number, though I know you're easily capable of taking first place if you get all of your followers behind you on this.
You should do a Panel de Pon episode. Lip is one of the most obscure Nintendo characters (as well as the whole series in general, especially outside of Japan. I think Lip's only direct appearance outside of Japan was an easteregg in Pokemon Puzzle Challenge (Miiverse had fun posting those screenshots), among some references in Smash (Lip's stick (great pun _), Lip's Theme, and a garbage block as one of Kirby's down-b transformations))
I bought this game as part of the Carpe Fulgur Collection during one of the sales. I've only played Recettear so far, but all three games look really good.
To everyone making the argument that this video series are proof that there are video games with female protags, I think you all are missing the point. People complain that there aren't any female protags simply because it's a very real problem in the AAA industry. I mean seriously, there remains an oversaturation of strong/buff/muscular/everyday white-or-pale-skin male video game protagonists. You only need to glance over video game history (Duke Nukem, Mario, etc.), as well as today's highest-selling and most popular titles and series (COD, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Gears of War, etc. etc.).
Games with female protagonists DO deserve more attention, but reality does not work that way. The AAA industry only cares about making money, and female protagonists in their eyes do not make as much as male ones unless they cater to the male demographic in any way. Female protag games lack widespread exposure compared to their male counterparts. Thus, the argument that "THERE ARE GAMES WITH FEMALE PROTAGONISTS IF YOU LOOK HARD ENOUGH" falls flat, because if you have to go out of your way to play games with female protags (through Indie games or otherwise), then we have a problem.
And the problem is not that whiny faux-feminist SJW/haters are somehow on a bloody rampage about the lack of female protagonists in games (although I will admit there is some merit to that sentiment). It is that if these people are are going to either indie games or japanese games for their fix of female characters, and by some unholy miracle are still not satisfied, then some part of the industry is to blame, and I can assure you it ain't indie or japanese.
Wow, this game looks really good. It reminds me of Threads of Fate with the graphics and font in battle, but this game seems so much better in gameplay save for the lack of interesting magic.
I'm trying to play the game with keyboard controls. Not being able to move the camera independently of moving is just really killing it for me. I might actually get a USB controller.
was looking up info on this game since I might buy it on steam sale and than somehow I ended up back on your youtube without realizing it D: got surpriced when I heard your voice!
I'm the only one seen Sword Art Online caracters been use?
I love the graphics of this game. It reminds me of Shenmue.
Nice video, Digi. I think I'm going to get this game now, haha.

The next video in this series fucking better be about the daring game for girls or I'm unsubbing.

Isn't that a really really broad criteria to base a whole series around?
Is this series going to focus solely on games from Japan with female protagonists or games with female protagonists in general?

"Forgivable"? I don't care that almost all the characters are 2D as long as they look great, which these do.

It would be nice if Drill Dozer got on this show, but access to that game is very limited, so it's hard to recommend.

So sad the creator of this game quit making games
I have had this game forever, I got bored of it because of my keyboard setup drove me crazy
this game looks so good

Weird I heard this game was really bad….well I guess I have to check it out
Hey! One item is called the Water Emblem. Is there a Fire equivalent to it? As in… a Fire Emblem?
Well this series didn't go far.
Wow, this game looks really good. It reminds me of Threads of Fate with the graphics and font in battle, but this game seems so much better in gameplay save for the lack of interesting magic.
I hate to tell you this but if you get to the ending there is a twincest plus aira ending lesbian twincest is one of the developers fetishes
So… Where's our Recettear Digibro!?!?? ; v ;bbbbbbbbb
Your fucking move, Anita
those mapplestory mushrooms though
Did Elise change colors at 2:46?
I'm trying to play the game with keyboard controls. Not being able to move the camera independently of moving is just really killing it for me. I might actually get a USB controller.
Me at the beginning: it's just me or this guy sounds suspiciously similar to Digibro…
Me after checking channel: lmao it's another channel of Digibro!
Nice review man, I really enjoyed this game 😉
